Order of the Dove

Mary has her own folk mythology unrelated
to the mainstream Christian myth.
In the mythological sense she is like the goddesses
in all cultures of the world.
The legends about Mary illustrate that Mary
is a force in people’s lives.

My card from the Mysteries of Mary tarot deck
depicting the young Virgin Mary as
Temple priestess in the Temple of the Dove
as told in The Mystical City of God:
Joachim and Anne set out from Nazareth,
accompanied by a few of their kindred and bringing
with them the true living Ark of the covenant,
the most holy Mary,
borne on the arms of her mother in order
to be deposited in the holy temple of Jerusalem.
They arrived at the holy temple, and the blessed
Anne, on entering, took her Daughter and Mistress
by the hand, accompanied and assisted by Joachim.
All three offered a devout and fervent prayer
to the Lord, the parents offering God their daughter,
and the most holy Child.
She heard a voice saying to her :
Come my Beloved, come my Spouse,
come to my temple where I wish to hear they
voice of praise and worship.

Welcome to new initiates

A while ago I opened the doors of The Temple of Mary
for the first time for online studies and initiations.
Welcome to those who have entered the Hearth
and may your every step be guided.
Through working with initiates in this ‘new’ way
I am updated and revising the course material
in an ongoing way and thus the flame is burning ever brighter

With the aid and help of God, She (Alchemy) reveals all hidden energies of the
whole wide world.  As the vine grower grafts the vine to the elm and
espalier, thus the magician, the alchemist, marries and unifies
heaven and earth, the lower and the higher energies.  (Pic de Mirandole)
(from the Initiation into the Immaculate Practise of the Sacred Heart,
Temple of Mary)

First Initiation into the Mysteries of the Temple of Mary – The Immaculate Practise of the Sacred Heart

The first initiation into the Temple of Mary is into the Immaculate Practise of the Sacred Heart.  This initiation takes place over a three month period and the meditations and practises shared during this circle of participation, form the foundation of all future practises and diksha.  The foundation work is set in this initiation and we will explore the context of the ancient temple mysteries, the alchemical process and symbols, the wisdom that Tarot offers, the tantric essence of all esoteric paths and more.

The first step is to apply to enter into the Hearth of the Temple and a questionnaire has to be completed by the applicant. Upon acceptance you will be given a mantra to work with for seven days.  These seven days of chanting the secret mantra will serve to align your conscious and unconscious will with the work of the Temple.  Then you will sit at an agreed time to receive an energetic diksha (transmission of energies) which will initiate you energetically into the Mysteries of Mary.
After this the manual will be sent to you in pdf format, as well as cds.  The cds contain recorded guidance and illumination of the practises, as well as selected meditation music and chants to be used during your own practise.  You will receive a healing diksha energetically at a mutually agreed time and on-going energetic support.  You will also receive on-line support through e-mails and I undertake to guide and support you to the best of my ability as long as the demands are within the boundaries of acceptable time and energy support.  I cannot resolve your life and its challenges for you – that is your part of your own personal journey.  The initiations of the Temple is designed to give you the context, the tools, the insight and the understanding into your own unconscious and its archetypes and the puppet masters of your psyche and through practise and application, you will be able to develop an awareness of the unconscious and allow the content to move into your consciousness, thus transforming and expanding your own personal consciousness.
When you have completed your training and have received your spiritual name you will have permission to use certain of the diksha and blessings on others in your capacity as Flamekeeper.
I will send you a list of recommended books to read which will assist on your journey towards Self-Realisation.
You will require a rosary, a japa mala, a small altar with cloth and a statue or image of Blessed Mary, as well as a prayer shawl or dhoti.
You will receive emails from time to time with instructions to join in with group meditations on an energetic level and also with healing focus for a specific period of time.
You may want to familiarise yourself with the Tarot as this will assist toward a deeper understanding of the symbols used in the initiations.
It is recommended that you follow my blog The Sacred Mysteries of Mary tarot at http://www.bookofmarysacredheart.blogspot.com for on-going teachings and deeper
insight into the forgotten story of  Mary.

The Temple of Mary is dedicated to The Path of Love
in the mystery tradition of
esoteric Christianity and the Bridal Chamber mysteries
as contained in the Kaballah, Tantra and the ancient Christian
Temple Mysteries.
The Sacred Marriage takes place in the Temple of the Heart.
We travel through the seven veils or gates in order
for the Way to be opened up and for the
Mother Ray to burn brightly in the Chalice.
The Sacred Marriage takes place between Logos,
the intellect, enlightenment, knowledge
and
Lady Wisdom, Sophia, she who is
one with unconditional love and compassion and who
weaves her spirit in this world through our actions.
Knowledge alone will not gain you entry into
the Temple of Heart, the Kingdom of God.
Initiates of the Temple of Mary are Bhakta (devotees to the
principle of Divine Love) and Flamekeepers (serving  The Temple of Mary). Initiates are guided by the Temple and Vision Keeper Sri Hettienne Ma Bhakty Maria .
A divine feminine consciousness is arising in collective humanity. Feminine and masculine do not refer to gender, but to the active and receptive principles. Millennia of patriarchy (the father principle) and church teachings have suppressed men and women and the feminine principle and many have suffered and many are still suffering because of our imbalanced society and the general hardening of hearts. And the suffering is not gender exclusive. All of humanity, the Earth and her creatures are suffering because of the suppression of the feminine and the loss of compassion and empathy that comes with it.
We honour the embodiment of the Divine in the mythical, the mystical and the ordinary.
We honour Mary the Virgin, the Bride, the Mother and the Wise Woman. We honour Mary as embodiment of the Goddess and the feminine Christ. We honour the Virgin Mother who gives birth to the Sun; the Holy Rose Queen of Love and the blessed Divine Crone, Lady of Light, the Black Madonna. We honour Mary Magdalene as an aspect of Mary, the hidden Mary in the shadows and Her sacred relationship with Yeshua (the historical Jesus) which sanctifies sexual human relationships and elevates
the relationship with the Beloved to the sacred Union. The feminine and masculine counterparts are restored to equality and unity and the Christ principle embodied through both God/dess’ sons and daughters.
The path of The Temple of Mary is a bridge between feminine and masculine, head and heart, between the Light of the East and the Light of the West – all placed at Her feet, the Great Shekinah, the Beloved manifesting as us.
The Temple of Mary does not subscribe to any religion or cultural tradition. We subscribe to the religion of the soul and the gnosis that ‘God’ (as term for the Absolute and Unchanging nature of Reality) resides in each and every soul.
Via Maria, the way of the Temple of Mary, follows the principle of Tantra or Bridal Mysticism where the Soul and Her divine Beloved, are seen as Lover and Beloved, Bride and Groom. The alchemical marriage takes place within the initiate and the golden child within (the Christ within) is born through Divine Grace.
The tradition of the Temple of Mary is based on spiritual discipline, mantra, diksha, meditation, forgiveness and service to others.
“The Madonna of course also includes what can be born out of the human soul : the true higher being slumbering in every human being, that which is best in us and flows and weaves through the world as spirit’ – Rudolph Steiner

Asherah, Lady of Wisdom, Queen of Heaven, Sophia, Shekinah and today known as Mary

Exactly one year ago I had a powerful vision which I
wrote about on the blog Shaman She-WhoKnows.
Today as I am putting together the manual and sacred drama
for the Third Initiation into the Mysteries of The Temple of Mary,
this vision forms the core of this initiation.
We have entered a powerful ‘gate’ in consciousness
of ‘enlightenment’, and this gate indeed started with and is
now returning full circle to the ancient image
of the Divine Feminine, known as Asherah.
This doorway or gate is also called the Lionsgate of awakening.
(See my previous post)

Asherah who is symbolised by The Tree of Life;
known as El Shaddai, which means God with Breasts;
who has Her origins in ancient Egypt
and who was eradicated from western religion
by King Josiah.
She was known as the Queen of Heaven;
Lady Wisdom and she was hidden
in the Kabbalah as the Shekinah
and in the Bible as Wisdom and Sophia.
She is the Throne (as in the great Isis)
and in the Litany of Loreto, her many titles
now belong to Mary.
I share the vision here with you but its full importance and relevance
will be revealed and experienced by you during the retreat
when we enter into sacred time and space through
sacred drama and journeying

Visions and dreams :  there are those that stand out with such luminosity and with a strong aura of having significant meaning.   I have written, journaled and painted some of my visions and some of my dreams.  Some of my dreams are only images and colours captured during the events of the day;  some are personal and archetypal and then there are those that I never forget.  These have layers upon layers of meaning.  Some of the meaning I immediately understand and the other layers are revealed with time.

Such a dreamvision I had over the past few nights.  One of the Tree of Life, the Goddess, the Lion and Serapis.

Let me share the background to the dream with you.

For the past few months I have been dreamvisioning the thirteen alchemical goddesses for the Wheel of the Year for Temple of Mary and the Sacred Feminine Conference we are hosting in October 2013, as well as the alchemical wheel of Shekinah and its initiations during the Temple of Mary retreats.  (You can read more about these on my other blogs and website.) And I have been working specifically with the goddess Asherah as matriarch of the Mary line, through Asherah, Astarte, Queen of Heaven and eventually Mary.

My son has been planning a very special tattoo for himself.  One that has great meaning for him.  It contains a lion and a tree.  A few nights ago I dreamt the image in a beautiful synthesis of the lion and tree of life :  the one merging into the other, like a sacred marriage.

A week ago I went through a very intense experience with the catalyst being a severe allergic reaction to Vit E oil – an allergy I did not know my body had.  I ended up in hospital with drugs being chased into my body as my body spiralled down in anaphylactic shock.   I left my body and witnessed the extreme distress and rapid lowering of my blood pressure and the panic when the epiphinidrine hit my heart.  For the next three days I was in and out of my body while being aware and conscious. I visited realities and dimensions that I cannot really capture verbally yet.  Whatever was revealed to me during this time, will now be distilled in my subconscious till my mind is ready to give birth to this immaculate conception.

Since I returned fully to my body a few days ago, the words ‘vision’ and ‘dream’ has taken on a new profound meaning.

The Vision :.

We were all gathered in the courtyard.  The light had the luminosity of the Otherworld.  In the centre of the courtyard grew the Tree of Life, its trunk twisted and gnarled, housing an entire city of light.  The sound of the heavens played in its leaves.  I was below, at the base of the trunk, in my role as healer.  I blessed those that came up to me.  A man sat down in front of me, asking for healing.  As I placed my hands on him, I felt the healing power coursing through my body and flowing down my arms and hands.  I was familiar with this transference of healing energy and was unperturbed.  The next moment he jumped up, amazement on his face.  He shouted out “look at that beautiful being!!”.  Before I turned around I was aware of the pillar of light behind me and as I turned around I said ‘oh yes, that is Serapis.  I saw a beautiful light being in intense white light.

As I was looking at this pillar of light which my Self recognised as Serapis, the vision expanded.  A lion appeared from the branches of the Tree of Life,  facing the East and the rising Sun.  She growled and her mane shook and reverbated and the hair became one with the branches of the giant tree.  She roared into the sky, ‘Osiris!!!!’

As I was watching the scene in awe, my lips formed the word FORTEZA and I continued chanting this word as I returned to consciousness.

(Here follows the research that I did then, but since then more had been revealed to me – this has now been included in the manual for the third initiation)

I then did some research and the very first page I open give me the following and more. (you may want to explore the pages at http://thequeenofheaven.wordpress.com Asherah Part III The Lion Lady)

Serapis Bey is Chohan of the Fourth Ray, the white ray.   Serapis can help people prepare to receive the Holy Spirit’s gift of the working of miracles.  Serapis Bey works specifically with kundalini awakening and ascension and the ability of working miracles through the kundalini energy in the root chakra. He is often depicted with the caduceus staff.

And he was known as the god Osiris in ancient Egypt!!

Serapis was a Greco-Egyptian god in 3 BC whom many believe that the story of Jesus was based on and he was known as Serapis Christus.

.One of the very first Egyptian goddesses was Qadesh and she was known as the Lion Lady.  She was also known as Asherah, Astarte-Anat, the Canaanite goddess, spouse of the Canaanite bull god, El.

Asherah was depicted as both Lion and as the Tree of Life.  And her sacred symbol and object was the staff with two serpents!  The same staff that Serapis Bey carries and the modern-day symbol of healers.

Aherah Astarte Anat

And Forteza means fortitude and it is the name of the Tarot Card in the Mantegna tarot
known today as the Strength card in the Major Arcana
It would seem that the initiatiates into the Temple of Mary is being assured of Cosmic healing, protection and growth.

29 July 2013 – Christmas of the Era of Love

The numerological value of 29 July 2013 is 6.
Six represents The Lovers in the Tarot, the
sacred marriage,
 the Star of David,
the integration of Spirit and Ego,
 both the Mother
and Father – the symbol of the Star of David.
The 29 equals the Master Number of 11.
So it is an important date in any case.
But then the planetary alignments this year have been filled with exceptional
alignments of Saturn and Jupiter
and seven planets in Capricorn (twice in June and July)
the triple moons with the Supermoon in July and
then the Star of David grand sextile on 29 July.
A year ago I had a vision of the Lion growing forth from
the Tree of Life planted in a rocky earth.  The lion
roared Serapis and Resurrection, whilst facing East
into the Light of a new dawn.
And the new dawn has arrived and is manifesting in
the triple moons, followed by the grand sextile.
It is interesting to note that 6 is divisible by 3.
3 in Tarot is The Empress or the Creator card.
The website where I extracted the information from below, is at the end of this post.

This Cosmic Moon, the last of the 7 Mystic Moons, contains an awesome set of planetary movements and aspects, which correlate very closely to the Dreamspell version of the Tzolkin. The outer planets move very slowly and are already in position as the inner planets move into aspects with them. Just after Galactic Synchronization, on the 4th day of the Magnetic Moon, July 29, 2013, the planets will form an almost exact Grand Sextile. The Grand Sextile also includes two Grand Trines. These are all very positive and harmonious aspects completely surrounding the planet in a Sacred Geometric configuration. This is an awesome alignment of the planets in the solar system emcompassing the Earth in the geometry of a Stargate.
Here is an image of the astrology chart for the grand sextile. I accentuated the Grand Trine & Grand Sextile aspects to highlight their geometry.
Notice the Star of David sacred geometry held by the planets of the solar system around the earth during this aspect.
Chart of the planetary alignment july 2013
Magnetic Moon 4, July 29, 2013, is the day of the Grand Sextile. It is encoded as Blue Spectral Hand, “I dissolve in order to know. Releasing healing. I seal the store of accomplishment with the spectral tone of liberation. I am guided by my own power doubled.” What an affirmation for planetary healing and upliftment. This aspect comes into play one week after the Full Moon of the Cosmic Moon, which is the last of 3 Super Moons in a row. The Super Moon is when the Full Moon falls on the day when the Moon is closest to the Earth. The Moon moves into position to create a Grand Trine with Venus and Pluto which also completes a Grand Sextile around the planet Earth. The Grand Trine with Venus, Pluto and the Moon signifies the possibility of transformation (Pluto) through the power of beauty (Venus) and love (Super Moon).
It is significant to note that the planet Venus holds the energies of the
goddess Venus, and the energy of the Love Goddesses, currently
held by Mother Mary as well as the principle of Beauty.
(The path of Beauty is a valuable and intrinsic part of The Temple of Mary
to be explored in depth)
Pluto is the god of transformation and the actions of this god is also known
as ‘death’.  In Vedic astrology the Moon rules the mind and in western esoteric
wisdom, the Moon rules the subconscious and the watery emotions.
In my discussion on the blog http://www.shaman-shewhoknows.blogspot.com
about the vision of the lion, I discussed its symbolism and relevance
as pertaining to the goddess Asherah, and the pertinence of the Tree of Life.
In the work of Karen Armstrong, The History of God, through meticulous
and exhaustive research, she writes in detail about the Jewish goddess Asherah
and the usurpation of the idea of God by the Romans and the
subsequent creation of christianity.
She points out a much-ignored fact :  the goddess existed in the Jewish
faith, namely Asherah, and that both Mary and Mary Magdalene
were priestesses in the temple of Asherah.  The first genocide of the Jewish
people was perpetrated by the Romans and that time was called
the Destruction of the Temples.  Coincidentally, the Destruction of the
Temples was celebrated a fortnight ago in the Jewish tradition.
The Romans destroyed all statues and temples of Asherah the goddess
and all her people, men, women and children.  The destruction was so
great that the Jews killed themselves in order to avoid the horrible
fate.
She also presents factual historical research into the early images of ‘God”
as a lion in both the ancient Jewish and Hindu traditions.

From Wikipedia : The Lion of Judah (Rev 5:5) is the symbol of the Israelite tribe of Judah in the Book of Genesis. Judah was the fourth son of Jacob the Israelite and was the progenitor of King David. The Lion of Judah is also a phrase in the Book of Revelation representing Jesus, which originated from the tribe of Judah

Asherah, the Jewish goddess, was incorporated into the Tree of Life (the Jewish esoteric
mystical path) as the Shekinah.  She was known as the Lion Goddess.
Isis in ancient Egypt, was known as the Lion in her highest aspect.
Karen Armstrong makes the case that the creators of Christianity,
absorbed these symbols into their religion in order to
‘hi-jack’ the symbols buried in the unconscious of humanity,
a game of smoke and mirrors, so to speak.
(We still see this at play in today’s media and in the parlance
of sales people and conmen – use the trigger words and symbols
and create a false reality.)
The cult of Asherah, the goddess, and her peoples
were obliterated in order for a patriarchal religion
based on masculine principles of the Logos alone,
to be created.
The holy Trinity now became, Father, Son and a masculine Holy
Spirit.  This meant that no feminine principle whatsoever was
present and as a result the feminine attributes of beauty,
love, compassion, charity, co-operation and so forth,
lost all value in the world.
In his book The Hebrew Goddess, Patel
points out the following :
And then there’s the matter of the Cherubim that sat atop the Ark of the Covenant in the Holy of Holies. Fashioned by Phoenician craftsmen for Solomon and Ahab, an ivory tablet shows two winged females facing each other. And one tablet shows male and female members of the Cherubim embracing in an explicitly sexual position that embarrassed later Jewish historians … and even the pagans were shocked when they saw it for the first time. [The Star of David, two triangles “embracing” became the coded symbol for God & Goddess locked in a “creating” posture….!]
Kabbalists, students of the esoteric Judaic tradition, does not view this world
as inherently evil, nor as separate from the divine.  To them the Star of David
symbolises the interlocking and eternal embrace of Lover and Beloved,
God and human, similarly to the Hindu view of the eternal embrace
of Shakty and Shiva.
The Gabriel Messages (channeled material received by Shanta Gabriel)
call this period of time the Lion’s Gate Initiation

And here we are, on a mystical Christmas Eve,
witnessing the Star of Bethlehem in the skies
announcing the birth, re-birth and resurrection
of the Lion, the Christ, the Holy Son and Daughter of the Most High

Through the symbolism of the Lion we are shown that
we are on the eve of a return to Innocence, to the unadulterated
symbolism embedded in the depths of the unconscious of humanity;
a return to a true sense and intuition of the God within, as opposed
to the mythical and masculine creature created by man and called God
in Heaven, separate and devoid of the feminine.

First the three moons appeared reminding us of the three wise men
who followed the first Star of Bethlehem.
(In the Judaic tradition Bethlehem is regarded as the City of David)
And tomorrow the Star of David will appear in the sky,
beckoning all to witness the birth of the consciousness
that will be able to grasp and understand that
the literal and mythical interpretation of God is no longer necessary.

Enlightenment is when you pass through the gateless gate.
When you realise that you are both the gate and they key
and that neither truly existed.

This is the birth of a new consciousness that will be available
to all of humanity.  This new era of Love will be accessible
to those who are willing to let go of the lower realms of the mythical
gods and goddesses and who are courageous enough to embrace
the dictum ‘you are the gate and you are the key’.
The Christed Son and Daughter of the Most High is the Self.

In The Temple of Mary we will immerse ourselves in these energies
during the Third Initiation and we will explore
the stone buried at the foot of the Tree of Life.

Prepare for the Third Initiation

The Queen of Heaven
The third initiation into the Mysteries
will be an initiation into the Cosmic Soul, the Anima Mundi,
Sophia, Shekinah
I loved her above health and beauty, and chose to have her instead of light for the light that cometh from her never goeth out Wisdom of Solomon

Prepare for a weekend with a different cadence and routine
as the previous ones.

The colours of Sophia-Shekinah-Eros are white, blue and gold.
This initiation will focus on the Sacred Marriage, the Divine Unity
which is the Cosmic Soul/Sophia/Shekinah and the Kabbala Tradition.

The indivisibility, ie the inner sacred marriage,
the unity of Shekinah/Sophia
is an integral part of esoteric Hindu teachings, Gnosticism and
the Kabbalah tradition

On Friday evening we will partake of the sacrament of the sacred grape (wine yes!) to be followed
by the Feast of Eros.
On Saturday morning the Altar of the Holy Grail will be erected and white flower garlands will be made.  The sacred space will be opened with chanting of the sacred sounds. Please wear white puja clothing for this day.  Please bring a piece of clear quartz and more than one piece if you have.
Meditation of the Ishta Devata, chanting of the sacred sounds, and more mystery to be revealed during the retreat.
On Saturday night we will re-enact the Procession of the Grail and the Awakening Ritual.  I will ask you to bring certain pieces of clothing and/or props – they will all be simple things easily available.
Please bring white, gold and blue pieces of cloth for cloaks, shawls or veils.  You may use this time to contemplate on the focus of the weekend by embroidering gold stars onto your blue cloak or shawl.  (Men and women both).  Read the books of the Apocrypha (they are not in the Protestant Bible, only in the Catholic Bibles, but they are freely available on line) Wisdom, The Song of Songs and Proverbs – these are all available on the website sacred-texts.
Women please also bring a veil that can cover the bottom part of your face.  All shamanic drums, tambourine drums and small drums are welcome
I will send more information and instructions soon.

Archer, are you missing the mark?

You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness;
For even as he loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable.
Quote from Kahlil Giban’s The Prophet
Earlier this week I caught a snippet of a programme on the History channel
on television on the spiritual practise of Japanese archery.
I cannot remember the exact commentary, but the few words that jumped out at me and
stayed with me for days were :
‘the goal is to sacrifice the personal desire to hit the target and to rather allow
for the spirit and body to harmonise’.
Not that profound I suppose, but ponder on these words.
It also brought to mind the definition of  ‘sin’ to mean ‘an archery term that means
to miss the mark’.
Now, if you put these two thoughts together, it does become profound.
In the game of leela, in this world, you have two players, the proverbial
angel and daimon, the ego and Spirit.  At times you feel opposed,
at other times you feel as though you have the champion in your corner, but how often
do you feel in harmony with your Spirit?
What do you measure this harmony by?
Do you look at how ‘successful’ your life is?
Do you measure it by how often you meet your goal?
I suppose, the important question is,
what is your goal?
And what would you say is the ‘sin’ of missing the mark?  One can only
know the answer to this if your know what the mark is.

When we let go of our desire to be clever or successful
or to change the world, or to create beautiful things,
we may begin to be open to the sacred truth
of our experience as it is, not how we want it to be.

For you, as a spiritual person, in search of direct immersion in your Self and
Spirit, the mark cannot be the hitting of the target set out for you
by your personal self!!
I went to read up a bit more on Japanese archery and it seems that the spiritual practise
is regarded as a secret.  I would think that is because people have the tendency to take things out
of context and the mind has the tendency to claim ownership of that
which he does not understand at all!!
Here are some extracts of what I found, and these few lines are all you need
for your application and understanding of the teachings of the Temple of Mary.
(I am not suggesting that you take up archery!)
Kyudo is practiced in many different schools, some of which descend from military shooting and others that descend from ceremonial or contemplative practice. Therefore, the emphasis is different. Some emphasize aesthetics and others efficiency. Contemplative schools teach the form as a meditation in action. In certain schools, to shoot correctly will result inevitably in hitting the desired target. For this a phrase seisha hicchū, “true shooting, certain hitting”, is used.

According to the Nippon Kyudo Federation the supreme goal of kyudo is the state of shin-zen-bi, roughly “truth-goodness-beauty”,which can be approximated as: when archers shoot correctly (i.e. truthfully) with virtuous spirit and attitude toward all persons and all things which relate to kyudo (i.e. with goodness), beautiful shooting is realized naturally.

Kyudo practice  includes the idea of moral and spiritual development. Today many archers practice kyudo as a sport, with marksmanship being paramount. However, the goal most devotees of kyudo seek is seisha seichū, “correct shooting is correct hitting”. In kyudo the unique action of expansion (nobiai) that results in a natural release, is sought. When the technique of the shooting is correct the result is that the arrow hits the target. To give oneself completely to the shooting is the spiritual goal, achieved by perfection of both the spirit and shooting technique leading tomunen musō, “no thoughts, no illusions”.

Perhaps the best way to explain the spirit of kyudo is to put it in Onuma sensei’s words: “When shooting, sometimes we will hit the target but miss the self. At other times we will miss the target but hit the self. Our purpose, though, is to hit the target as the self and hope that the sharp sound of arrow penetrating paper will awaken us from the so-called ‘dream of life’ and give us real insight into the ultimate state of being.”
Their belief is that matters of the spirit are not teachable and that it is a waste of time to devote any part of your study to anything other than technical proficiency. In one sense that view is correct. The development of the spirit is an ongoing, personal experience. A teacher may lead the way by his or her example but there is very little they can do to actually “teach” spirit. But as Onuma sensei also liked to say, “If one day you wish to have a large, beautiful pine tree as the center-piece of your garden you do not wait until you are old to plant the seed. The seed must be planted early and the tree nurtured over the years if it is to be truly grand at the end of your life.” The same can be said of the development of the spirit.
We are often asked what makes kyudo so special; what does it offer the kyudo practitioner that they cannot find elsewhere. Without hesitation we always answer, “nothing.” That is because kyudo is only one pathway among many as we travel through life. The three essential elements of kyudo, Truth, Goodness, and Beauty, are by no means exclusive to the practice of kyudo. These qualities have been an integral part of every culture throughout history and are fundamental to the creation of our arts, philosophy, and religious activities. So why do most great kyudo masters impress upon their students the relationship between spiritual development and kyudo practice? Because it is an excellent vehicle for the study of the human character and condition, and it works well in concert with all of life’s other spiritual paths. Everyone that watches an accomplished kyudo practitioner is struck by the simplicity of the act, and it is easy to imagine that the same thing goes through their mind as went through ours upon seeing kyudo for the first time: That there doesn’t appear to be much going on. It’s just a matter of memorizing a few simple moves and holding the bow steady. The target is not so far away. There is no extreme physical exertion. No screaming and jumping about. All said it appears simple enough to be learned in a few sessions. Our teacher even supported our thoughts when, at our first meeting, he said, “Kyudo is a simple art consisting of just eight basic movements which take no more than a few minutes to complete. The practice of kyudo requires only that you align your body with the target, stand straight, fill yourself with spirit, and shoot with a pure heart and meaningful purpose.”
Simple enough, we thought. But, we were in for a shock. Both of us are quick learners with good powers of observation and the ability to correctly translate physical movement into being. Kyudo looked easy enough, but that view quickly changed when we first picked up a Japanese bow. Never mind about shooting with a pure heart and meaningful purpose, it was completely overwhelming to simply keep the arrow nocked to the bowstring. It was very frustrating to say the least. For a long period of time all of our training sessions were of a strictly technical nature, giving weight to the idea of teaching technique and ignoring the spiritual aspects of Kyudo. So why did Onuma sensei insist that spirit was equally, if not more, important than technique? Because there are many levels to the development of the spirit and the first goes hand in hand with the process of learning anything new: It is the recognition and, later, the development of one’s personal character. It is human nature to experience frustration, anger, joy, pride, and embarrassment when learning. And while it is extremely difficult to eliminate those emotions it is possible to temper your responses to them. And that should be one of your first considerations as you begin your practice of kyudo.
In order to control your reactions to a situation you must first recognize your reactions to a situation. Sounds simple, but while emersed in the trials of learning the last thing on our mind is self-reflection. As a kyudo practitioner, however, you must make a conscious effort each time you shoot to mentally document not only the technical aspects of your shooting but your emotional response to the shooting as well. In time, a recognizable pattern of behavior will emerge. Kyudo is an art and, as with any art form, personal emotion is reflected in the content of the art. In kyudo, anger will make your shooting tight and uncontrolled, frustration will create unsettling nervous tension, and excessive pride will rob the shooting of its beauty and elegance. It is that knowledge, and the ability to use the knowledge to control emotional self-expression that separates a true master of kyudo from a person who is merely technically proficient. It is also why an aging master, though they may suffer from diminished physical and technical capability, can still inspire all who watch them with a shooting style that is far beyond that of a younger practitioner. And it is that knowledge and control that every new kyudo practitioner should seek out for themselves, even in the early stages of their study. It is the essence of kyudo, and a sure path to a deeper understanding of truth, goodness, and beauty.
So, what is the point I am trying to get across?
Firstly, as a spiritual seeker your goal is to be in harmony with Soul and Spirit, in other words
with Self and that requires sacrificing the ego and mind and its personal desires.
If you can imagine yourself as the archer, who sacrifices the need to hit the target
in order to harmonise himself with the bow and arrow
and with the flying of the arrow, regardless of hitting the target…….
At first, the student has to practise the skill of archery.  Mastering the technical skill
takes many many years and eventually the target is hit.
The target probably could have been hit right from the beginning, if the ego was
allowed to prevail.
But through the shift of focus, the desire of the personality was sacrificed.
The need to be successful was sacrificed.
The need to look good in the eyes of the world was sacrificed.
The habit of measuring your ‘okayness’ by the desired outcome of your
actions was sacrificed.
The need to achieve was sacrificed.
The need to be happy because the personal goal was achieved was sacrificed.
The need to receive attention and acclaim was sacrificed.
The need to feel good about the personal self was sacrificed.
The need to prove a point was sacrificed.
The need to validate yourself was sacrificed.
The need to feel good about yourself was sacrificed.
The need to feel satisfied was sacrificed.
The need to feel happy was sacrificed.
Maybe you have a few of your own that you can add here.
When your goal is truly at-one-ment, and direct mystical living and experience,
then the personal will and desire has to be sacrificed.

I invite you into a process of transformation.  As you apply
the daily practises, try not to set a particular goal for yourself,
other than showing up to what is offered and being open to the experience
of your sacred life.

The ego and mind uses rationalisation and justification in order to maintain
its existence.  It creates belief system in order to keep you tied to
it (the mind) and in order to maintain its existence.
If you truly want to have a direct mystical experience, you have to
be willing to let go of your deepest belief systems.  They disguise themselves
in such a way that you forget that they truly are not a part of your True Self.
You have come to accept their voices as the voice of your True Self, or as the Voice of God.
The Voice of God is not a voice.  It is a feeling that resonates in every cell of your being.
It is a feeling of lightness, expansion, joy, ease and bliss.
It is actually a place of no-thing within yourself and everything – an emptiness,
devoid of reason and will and drive and knowing.  It just IS.
Expectation can preclude the opportunity for discovery.
When we try to reach a goal, we become fixated on it and we miss the
process.

Beginner’s mind is the practise of coming to an experience wth an
openness and a willingness to be transformed.

It makes sense that if you want to become harmonised with Self which is no-thing,
you have to allow the personal self to be removed.
And here your personal will enters the picture as you have been given freedom of choice.
You can choose to cling to old habits, stubborn belief systems and comfortable
knee-jerk reactions, or you can crucify the personal will.
‘Know thyself’ is the epitaph in most traditions.  Know the world that
we live in.  Know the culture that you move in.  Through immersion you come to
know the world, but there comes a time when you need to wake up and realise
that you are not that.
Dr Matthew Fox has written a Litany of Deliverance from Patriarchy. (this is
and extract)  It may be worth your while to
print this and stick it up somewhere where you can see it often – to remind you
that this is the world that you live in – your mind has been conditioned
to accept this ‘sin’ as reality :
A Litany of Deliverance
From Patriarchy’s dualism
From Patriarchy’s proneness to self-pity
From Patriarchy’s sentimentalism
From Patriarchy’s violence
From Patriarchy’s lack of imagination
From Patriarchy’s intellectual laziness
From Patriarchy’s lack of authentic curiosity
From Patriarchy’s separation of head from body
From Patriarchy’s preoccupation with sex
From Patriarchy’s fear of intimacy
From Patriarchy’s reptilian brain
From Patriarchy’s envy and manipulation of children
From Patriarchy’s abuse of women
From Patriarchy’s homophobia
From Patriarchy’s righteousness
From Patriarchy’s forgetfulness of beauty and art
From Patriarchy’s quest for immortality
From Patriarchy’s matricide, spare us O Divine One!
Secondly, as in archery, the seeker has to go through the seemingly simple
practice, day after day, year after year.  It seems so simple and unnecessary.
To the mind it seems outdated and old-fashioned.
Why is all of this necessary, when I can merely aim at the target, shoot
and hit the target and walk away feeling satisfied with my efforts and results?
Because then you have missed the mark, my friend.

Durga Maa Mala/Rosary
Prem Se Bolo Jai Mata Di
A beautiful hand-made mala or rosary
dedicated to Durga Maa.
Ideal to wear as a necklace and to use
in japa and chanting
She is the fierce aspect of Shakty, the Divine Feminine.
I made this mala in the same pattern as the Rosary of the Holy Mother.
She is one and the same, by whatever name you call Her.
I used freshwater pearls in four different shades of white, pale pink, bronze and cream, interspaced
with swarovski crystals and
beautiful bronze rose beads and a glass heart foil in the centre.
The pendant I bought from one of the traders outside the temple at
Haridwar, India and it is stamped with the OHM on the back.
Here is a beautiful mantra to Durga Maa
